Announcing the appointment of our new NJCA Council Chair
It is with pleasure the NJCA announce the appointment by the Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, the Honourable Stephen Gageler AC, of incoming NJCA Council Chair, Chief Justice Lucy McCallum, Supreme Court of the Australian Capital Territory.
Her Honour was also elected by the Chief Justices of the State and Territory Supreme Courts as the Nominee Council Member.
The NJCA judicial education team, NJCA Council and NJCA Program Advisory Committee members welcome the appointment by Chief Justice Gageler and the corresponding appointment by the Chief Justices of the States and Territory Supreme Courts.
Chief Justice Lucy McCallum has been a Supreme Court judge for over 16 years, presiding over numerous criminal trials and civil hearings as well as sitting as a judge of appeal. She was first appointed as a judge of the Supreme Court of NSW in 2008, until 2019 when she was elevated to the NSW Court of Appeal. In March 2022, she was affirmed as the Chief Justice of the ACT Supreme Court.
Her Honour began her legal career as a solicitor practising in commercial litigation before moving to the role of public prosecutor for 3 years, in Canberra and then Brisbane. She returned to Sydney in 1991 and went to the NSW Bar where she practised for 17 years, taking silk in 2005. Her Honour has given papers and presented at seminars addressing a range of topics in both substantive and procedural law. She has been involved in a number of judicial education programs, most recently including the NJCA program on Managing Sexual Assault Hearings. Her interests outside work include horse riding, rock climbing and reading.
We are excited to have Chief Justice McCallum as the Chair of our council and take this opportunity to give our heartfelt thanks to departing NJCA Council Chair, Chief Justice Christopher Kourakis, Supreme Court of South Australia, for his leadership and lasting contributions to judicial education in Australia over the past four years
