Judicial Officers with Leadership Responsibilities, April 2027

Lead with confidence. Lead with care.

Leading a court or tribunal brings challenges that legal training doesn’t prepare you for. You may have to raise a delayed judgment with a colleague, steer your court through technological change, respond to a crisis, or help experienced judges find renewed energy in their second decade on the bench.

This program brings judicial leaders from across Australia together for two days of practical, candid discussion with peers who understand the role.

The program begins with welcome drinks and dinner on the Wednesday evening, and a program dinner follows on Thursday. Both give you time to build connections with colleagues facing the same challenges.

You’ll come away with practical tools, fresh perspectives and a network of peers to call on.

Why you should attend this program?

The role and responsibilities of judicial leaders are considerable, requiring the management of many relationships, both internal and external. From the role as leader of the court, to functional communications with external stakeholders, there is a myriad of responsibilities to respond to and navigate.

What will this program cover?

There are various aspects to judicial leadership in Australia – administrative leadership, moral leadership, intellectual or thought leadership, cultural leadership and strategic leadership.

Across the two days you will:

  • Begin to understand your own leadership style and how to use it as a strength
  • Learn to lead with compassion learn strategies for handling difficult situations with courage and transparency
  • Navigate change and disruption, including lessons in crisis leadership from leaders both judicial and non judicial who have made hard decisions and who have had impact
  • Practise hard conversations, working with realistic scenarios
  • Acquire skills to manage external relationships with the media, the executive and the profession
  • Develop strategies to sustain motivation and wellbeing across your court, drawing on current national research into judicial wellbeing

How will these skills help your court?

The demands of judicial leadership are in part, dictated by the nature, function and size of the court or tribunal being led.

Leadership is critical to creating a culture of confidence and respect. It requires the ongoing shaping of competencies for effective leadership and management, building self-awareness, empathy, emotional intelligence and an understanding of personal impact and how to manage both change and people, while dealing with issues using processes that are transparent and fair.
